Session Update - June 28, 2016

This was the last week of the Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature and was the quietest week yet for Agriculture. The session ends Monday only for the next special session to begin exactly one minute later. We've been in the Capitol 103 days so far. We'll make it a few more weeks watching to make sure Ag stays safe for one more session! Stay tuned and be ready to participate in VoterVoive, when asked.

Session Update - May 31, 2016

It was very slow and quiet again at the legislature with the end in sight. We continue to watch the LSU AgCenter budget, but other than that, we are waiting for the next session. The special session will begin one minute after this one ends! Have a nice Memorial Day weekend, and thank you to all of those who have served our country!

Session Update - May 23, 2016

It has been another quiet, steady week at the Louisiana legislature. You don’t hear that very often, but it’s true as it applies to Agriculture in these waning days of the 2016 session. We’re watching the LSU AgCenter’s budget closely, as it has already been reduced by about $900,000. We are also working on a Capital Outlay project for the AgCenter regarding the Feed Sciences Building.

Session Update - May 16, 2016

It was a quiet week again this week at the Louisiana legislature. There were no Agriculture committee meetings, and there will be no more this session. The last four weeks will be spent on the House and the Senate floors focusing on the budget and preparing for a possible special session to address the State's deficit. There are several bills regarding Agriculture that we will watch for amendments that could be damaging to the industry as these issues are wide-ranging. We will do the heavy lifting at the Capitol, but if we call on you to participate via VoterVoice, please hit the submit button. Yes, it was quiet in Baton Rouge this week, and quiet is good!

Session Update - May 9, 2016

Things are finally moving at the speed of government at the legislative session. We passed legislation prohibiting local governments from superseding statute in regard to seed regulation. Raw milk legislation died, and negotiations related to the bill filed dealing with the Rice Research Board went very well. So far, so good. Thanks for all the help on the raw milk VoterVoice call to action. Have a great weekend!

Session Update - April 27, 2016

There are six weeks left of the Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Action this week centered around Senate Bill 29 by Sen. LaFleur which would allow the sale of raw milk. The bill was considered on the Senate floor and passed with amendments by a vote of 23 to 12. Farm Bureau opposes this bill because of the health risk of drinking raw milk. The bill will now go to the House for consideration. Please be on the lookout for a VoterVoice Action Request prior to consideration in the House Committee. Have a great weekend.

Session Update - April 18, 2016

It was a very active week in the Louisiana legislature. Both the House and Senate Agriculture Committees met to consider bills. We were successful in deferring SB 105 by Sen. Peacock that would require all agricultural commodities to be covered when transported on certain highways. SB 29 by Sen. Lafleur regarding the sale of raw milk passed favorably out of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee over the objections of Commissioner Strain, Dr. Jimmy Guidry, Director of Health and Hospitals, and Farm Bureau. Another issue that is of importance to us is SB 437 by Sen. Morrish which would abolish the LA Rice Research and Promotion Boards and create a new joint board. We are working this bill along with our LFBF Rice Advisory Committee.
